The Nitty Gritty of Self-Publishing (as told by me)

There's been a lot of talk lately about indie authors who decide to pull their work and call it quits. Boy, have I been there! Some days, I still think it would be so much easier to act as if this entire endeavor was an elaborate dream and I've just now woken up. The bottom line is that you have to love what you do more than you hate the details!

Writing is the fun part (most of the time) and the part most of us are the best at. Granted, there are some people who are good at all of it, but most aren't. After the manuscript is written, you have to pass it off to your editor (which you should have) and for formatting if you don't normally do your own. Then, beta readers or the like to look for issues missed in editing rounds one and two. Lastly, you run through the editing yet another time while compiling the suggestions from the beta readers and editor and look for continuity. You get covers made depending on how you're releasing your title. You pick a platform and click submit and there you go!

Obviously, there are a few parts that seem simple that really take forever, but you get the idea. Not to mention the money coming out of pocket to pay the service providers, unless you just have really awesome friends. In that case, I may need to make friends with these people :D

So you clicked submit. Now what? The short answer: market yourself. Ha! Easier said than done, unfortunately. Unless you already have a network of bloggers, writers, readers, etc., you may find yourself overwhelmed. Marketing is the part most of us suck at. But it's not really our fault! Some social media networks are requiring money in order to reach an audience. Pages I follow on Facebook are starting to move their business elsewhere because no one sees their updates anymore. A lot of people want to move to Google+, but aren't sure how it works and Twitter is so spammy it makes my eyes cross. Yet, most established indie authors will tell you to have the following:

Website
Blog
Twitter
Facebook Page
Wattpad
Google+
Tumblr
(Insert other social media here)

Still, all of these things can be instrumental to garnishing exposure, but most authors can't keep up with it all on their own and many don't feel it's worth the trouble now that it's harder to connect. I mean, really? Who has that kind of time? A writer should be writing, not pushing refresh on their News Feed every five seconds in hopes that someone retweets or shares their story. That's what we'd all like you to think, but sadly that is exactly what most of us do. We get so wrapped up in spamming seemingly pointless social media that we forget to actually write! Craziness!

If you have money, you can hire a personal assistant who is versed in social media, but this person will handle your business. I mean, all of your business. You'd basically be leaving your livelihood in the hands of someone you don't know so you can actually do the thing that creates your livelihood. (Ouch, my head hurts). Chances are, if you're writing, you don't have enough money to pay someone else's salary. If you do, I think I'd like to make friends with you, too!

Think about this, also. How many indie or self-published authors are out there? I think it's more feasible to ask how many aren't out there. These authors, including myself, have to break through the din to have our voices heard. That also means we have to believe in our work and that it's as good or better than the mainstream books. Dog eat dog, my friends.

Listen, there is no single secret. Not really. I've been writing my whole life. I've been published since 2010 and I'm as starved as starving can get! I've wanted to quit. I've told myself that publishing isn't worth the headache if I don't see the returns, but I'm 100% full of crap. Publishing is worth every second. My blood, sweat, tears and screams go into the stories I'm sharing with the world and, although the crowd is small, they're inviting me into their imaginations for a few days or weeks of entertainment and then back again with open arms. I may not be the best writer, but I believe in my stories and characters to a fault. My passion is inked on those pages and it shows.

So for all of those who are looking to quit, ask yourself why you started writing in the first place. Did you want to become famous? Did you want to tell a story? Did you think "what the hell" and crossed it off your bucket-list? Do you even enjoy writing?

Get back to basics. Figure out what you want, first! Find the joy in what was once your great love. If the butterflies and goosebumps are gone, you may need to break up for a while, see other people, find new fish and what not. But if at the end of the day, you find inspiration from a typo before auto-correct has the chance to change it, there's something bigger going on there (true story). Take a step back. The world is most certainly your oyster.

 'Til next time!

Been a while

Well it sure as hell has been a while since my last blog. I've been kinda chilling out, trying to get my bearings with all of the changes occurring in my life right now. Talk about being jaded...

There really aren't any book updates right now. I will have some important dates to list over the weekend, but right now I'm in a ranting type of mood. Lovely isn't it? You'd think I'd be doing something more productive with my time, but that just hasn't been my style lately. I think, sadly, that I've lost my groove...

Sounds silly, doesn't it? Recently, I've come to the realization that there are a lot of things in my life that are changing and I'm not changing with them. I should be on top of the hustle and bustle, but I mostly feel like I'm trailing behind them, just keeping up. It's incredibly stressful and annoying. Now, I'm not the type to normally whine about life in general, but everyone's entitled to it every now and again. At least that's how I see it.

I constantly feel like I'm waiting for something amazing to happen that will snap me out of my current state of wandering. What the hell am I waiting for? I haven't a clue. I guess, really, I'm waiting for something not to happen. See, the way things have always gone for me have been good for a while until life smacks me in the face with something brand new and equally laced with a fine coating of suck. Sad, yet true. So instead of getting uber excited about any of the potential prospects for my future, I'm weary. I'm also lacking the confidence to make the things happen that I can control. I know, I know, I'm a loser, but I'm also human.

So, where does that leave me? In a perpetual state of wait and see. I will wait and see how some things turn out and continue to do what I've been doing. I'll wait and see if the current goals will be carried out as planned, or if the suck will rear it's ugly head again. I'll wait and see if I can bring myself up to the correct level of excitement and anticipation in the wake of things to come. I'll simply just have to wait and see...

That being said, I'll "see" you guys around soon and thanks for "listening". The few of you who follow me won't be impressed with this blog, but at least I'm being honest! Ta-ta for now!

Another day...another 500 words

It seems every time I sit down to write, something stops me dead in my tracks. Tonight, I had a lot of things to do for the kiddos so everything else took second place to that. One thing I pride myself on is that even if I'm busy, I'm still a mommy first and that's my most important job. Next is, of course, my regular job than my writing and school probably tie. But I digress.

A measly 500 words was all I managed to pump out thus far. I'm about to lay down and do some hand writing to see what I can come up with. The only bad part is I have about two weeks to finish this book and some parts that haven't been configured yet. Woohoo! I'm starting to sweat!

I'll be posting my progress throughout the process of finishing Binding Secrets in hopes that you all might share some of my enthusiasm. Check back tomorrow for something completely different. A DELETED SCENE!!!

A Complete Breakfast

I was craving eggs pretty badly this morning, which is rare, so I got my butt up and went to Kroger. I decided to try the "Break-free" egg substitute instead of regular eggs and was pleasantly surprised!! It was actually really good. Instead of getting hash browns, I made my own variation and that turned out really good, too. All in all, I was able to put together a complete breakfast for 563 calories. The only thing missing was fruit, but that's because I'm going to have some for a snack later :). Here's my recipe:

What is beautiful???

Are the thin models from TV and magazines beautiful? Are the big women who are proud of their curves beautiful? What makes someone beautiful, really? I've struggled for a long time with this question, mainly pertaining to myself. Should I feel beautiful if I know I'm overweight?

Here's my story:

Haircuts, rubber snakes and sparkly shoes!

It's been a rather uneventful weekend, but that hasn't necessarily been a bad thing. My boys and I had a few things to get done today, so we first set off to buy new sneakers for school. It's funny how those little foot measuring things are completely off. With both boys the size was almost two smaller than what they actually needed. I finally got them situated when I spotted these beauties:

LOVE! I wanted to buy them so badly, but I had to refrain from this impulse buy. Being a one income household means I have to buy what my boys need before I can get what I want. Plus, I'd have to buy a new outfit go match these and this week's bill aren't all paid yet! It's a shame, too. They looked really good on me! :(

Sighing heavily, we left the shoe store and headed to the Great Clips. The boys got their hair cut and some lollipops and as a reward for their good behavior, we then went to the dollar store for some prizes. Now I don't know where you all shop, but there's a retail chain called Dollar Tree here and everything in the store is literally $1.00. It's a great place to get things for the kids to do without breaking the bank.

So, we picked up a take-a-long chalk board, rubber snakes, slinky-eye glasses, pirate garb, knight's bracers, Jack O' Lantern cups with straws and left happy. The best part was that I didn't spend a lot on the toys and they've got a variety to keep them occupied. All in all, shopping trips/errands were a success.

Anyway, I have some more writing to do before homework (yipee o.O) so it will be a nice busy evening for me. I say that as if every evening isn't busy! Stay tuned on Wednesday for another guest author as the blog tour continues. After the tour is over (9/30), I'll be posting an extra special blog (or two) with some pretty big announcements and some goodies. Tune in to Facebook and Twitter for updates and sneak peeks. I promise you won't be disappointed!!

Ta-ta for now!!

Sneak Peek for My Peeps!

So, if you've been keeping up with my Facebook and Twitter, you'd know that I just made TREMENDOUS progress with Binding Secrets! Woohoo! With all of the things going on lately, I'm so happy I've been able to finally get in the groove and bust out some good stuff for this sequel. I'm really excited about where the story is going! I can't say it won't have a cliffhanger ending, but it will definitely have a lot more action (wink, wink)!

Without further ado, here's a sneak peek into the highly anticipated book 2 in Legacy of Secrets, Binding Secrets:

One Thing After Another *sigh*

Well, those of you who keep up with my Facebook Page, I'm just getting over being incredibly sick. I have a bacterial infection that put my on my arse for almost two weeks. I didn't really feel right, I knew I was getting sick, I just didn't expect it to be as bad as it was. Everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING, was put on hold for that time. I didn't attend any classes, go to work, write anything or even really stay awake much of that time. I probably slept for six of the last ten days, but don't really feel rested. I needed a break from life, but WHOA! I didn't want to feel like death for two weeks!

So, anyway, that's been why I've been virtually a ghost. I've wanted to get online and chat with folks, not to mention do some work, but I could barely pick my head up. All in all, I'm feeling a bit better. The next few days will be the key.

That being said, I'm still shooting for an October release for Binding, but keep in mind with all the setbacks lately, this date is tentative. I hate throwing days out there and then not sticking to them, but life gets in the way sometimes and there really isn't anything else you can do.

Well, I hope I'll be able to check in much sooner. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you all are well and happy!

Endless Responsibilities

It seems I've hit a road block. I haven't really had the energy to sit down and write over the last week or so. I've had so many crazy things going on at home, it's been difficult to find time to breathe. I hope you all aren't too angry with me for being away so long!

I don't really have an upside to this post. Sometimes life just gets in the way of things you need to do and it's really that simple. Not to mention, the last few weeks have been hectic enough with school starting, birthday parties, important meetings and doctor's appointments. I wish it was over, but I'm afraid it's only beginning.

As of right now, I'm going to do my best to keep the book release of Binding Secrets to the end of October. I'm going to buckle down next week and get it done for you all. BUT...in the event something else comes up, I will let you guys know if I have to push back the release. That's the last thing I want to do, but I also don't want to put out something that could have been done better had I taken just a few more weeks.

That being said, I have two giveaways going on this month. Cursed Secrets will be free Saturday August 11th and Fire & Ice will be free Saturday August 18th. Each is only a one day promo, but you get the opportunity to read each book for free! As always, your feedback is greatly appreciated.

I promise to check in with you guys sooner next time. Hopefully life will calm down so I can get something done! <3

Guest Post #3: Bittersweet Ending on IAN Blog

Vacation Blues

After almost three years, I finally have a vacation from work! Woohoo! The problem is that I know I need to write and have barely scratched the surface of what needs to get done this week. As Binding Secrets is about 1/3 completed, there are so many more aspects that need to be written in order for this novel to progress. Yet instead of buckling down and typing my heart out, I'm staring at a blank screen.

My muse has also gone on vacation! How is it that I finally have almost 100% free time and still can't write? I guess such is life, though. Working under pressure is apparently my specialty. I am firm that I will do whatever necessary to get some serious writing completed this week. If that includes strapping myself to the chair and gluing my eyelids open, then so be it! Actually, I'm not one for cruel and unusual punishment so I'll more than likely take my tablet wherever I go to get the necessary scenes written.

In the meantime, those of you who've read Cursed Secrets and Fire & Ice are wonderful! While my style of writing isn't to everyone's liking, I am grateful for the reviews I've received no matter the outcome. Being an author is both rewarding and intimidating. With the genres I write in being structured by some of the biggest novels of our time, it is nothing less of a struggle for my voice to be heard. I thank you all, again, and hope that you'll continue putting your faith in me. Rest assured, there will be many more books to come (hint, hint)!

This is crazy!

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine my book to be so well received! The promo weekend is starting off with a resounding bang and a tremendous amount of downloads. It's both fantastic and frightening! I don't have any illusions to fame or fortune, but I feel like I'm finally in the right place!

Thank you just doesn't seem to be enough for those who've downloaded my book this weekend. It may not seem like much, but to indie authors all over the globe, even one reader is a triumph! Granted, the first edition of Cursed Secrets did become a bestseller very early on, but I value anyone and everyone who reads my books no matter which platform.

If you haven't yet, you can download Cursed Secrets for free until 11:59 on 7/15. Make it a bogo with the novella, Fire & Ice, for only $.99. For more information about my books, you can find me on Facebook, Twitter and My Website.

Thanks so much and if you've got the time, don't forget to leave a review!

Who I Am

My mind tends to wander. I guess this is one reason why writing comes naturally to me. When I'm at work (yes, I have a regular job!), I think about writing. When I'm writing, I think about school. When I think about school, I think about my kids or my family. And the cycle continues. I'm always thinking of things I could be doing instead of what I'm supposed to be doing and I've had such a hard time curbing my mental restlessness.

Perhaps I have this undeniable urge for life to change? Or maybe I'm anxious to see if this path is one worth continuing? It's hard to say this early in the game, but I'm not one to give up easily. My entire life, I've been a fighter. I fight for the ones I love. I fight for my ideals and beliefs. I fight for my children. Bottom line....I've got a strength deep inside that I didn't know I had and it keeps me going day after day.

Often, I blog about what's happening with my books and bits and pieces of real life. I'm not really that superficial. I'm a real person, with real problems and challenges, trying to find a really good way to live out this dream. I refuse to be stuck doing something I hate forever and I won't be told I have to write a certain way to fit in with today's pop-literature. I am my own person; I have my own voice.

Basically, this is my way of saying that I may type with a lot of exclamation points and post a ton of stuff about how my writing is going, but I'm just trying to figure out the best way to do the one thing I've always loved to do. I'm not just a writer, it's engrained in my DNA to tell stories and create mysterious worlds and characters everyone can fall in love with. I don't write just write to make a living, I write because it's my passion!
